It's not actually hear *yet* as we have a few more weeks of vacation, but I wanted to post a quick hello and share some information.

This year there will be classes in the library again. Yay! Students will learn about book care, library usage, digital literacy, online safety, robotics, and other fun stuff. We will also read the book award books together and have some fun with related activities. If you're interested in the book award books, here are the lists:

Red Clover Book Award (grades K-4)

Golden Dome Book Award (grades 4-8) (I forgot to post here that the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award program was renamed to the Golden Dome Book Award program, a name submitted by our very own DBS 4th graders and voted on my students around the state!)

I hope you have been reading this summer and enjoying the sunshine (when it isn't raining!). I can't wait to see everyone back in the library again soon! The fish are excited to see you too! They get lonely over the summer.

We all have a chance to nominate, then there is a vote, then the winner is announced at the District-wide Back-to-School Breakfast at the beginning of the year.
<p style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #373737; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px 0px 1.625em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">This year, Covid-19 hit and all norms went right out the window! I maybe thought about Teacher of the Year briefly when I realized we weren’t doing the District Breakfast, but that was about it. I assumed we were not doing it this year due to Covid. There is A LOT we are not doing this year because of Covid! But you know what they say about assuming…
<p style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #373737; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px 0px 1.625em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">At our first official staff meeting, held virtually, of course, Mr. D announced the two longevity awards (for teachers who have been in the district for a long time) and then said this: Video
<p style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #373737; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px 0px 1.625em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">I had no idea! If I even suspected, I would have done my hair and not been eating an apple! :) The one day I woke up late, threw my hair in a ponytail, and tossed some random foods in my lunch box… turns out to be the day the whole school is looking at me! The Vermont Department of Libraries formed a committee last spring, consisting of teachers, students, and Dept. of Libraries staff. Students from around the state submitted name ideas and I was hoping the committee would have a new name before school starts, but instead they have picked their top 10 and will let students vote on the final name. I'll be sure to share the voting information when it becomes available.

For now, regardless of the name, there are new award books to read this year! As usual, read them and enjoy them. When you read five or more books you get to vote on your favorite one. The book that gets the most votes from students around the state gets an award.

It's hard to believe, but we are in our sixth week of remote learning, with six more weeks to go! If you had asked me back in February if we would have closed schools, I never would have guessed it! The idea that we took a whole school (a whole district, and state, and country!) and switched withing a mater of days from classroom learning to remote learning is just mind boggling! I saw this quote on Facebook today and really like it.
Apparently he is a professor of religion, but don't mind that. I just connect with the idea that we are figuring out how to do remote learning only moments before trying to teach it to children and families. Every step of the way we are trying to decide what is best for teachers, students, and families. How can we engage kids, keep them learning (or at least stop them from un-learning!), while also supporting families and teachers in this unprecedented time of trauma and uncertainty. It is certainly an experience we will never forget.

That said, I am extremely impressed with how well we as a school community are doing with this new experience. The teachers and staff are all working hard to deliver the best possible lessons, while trying to teach students how to use the technology, and trying to balance the amount of time kids spend online and off. Students are working hard to engage with their teachers and get their school work done, even though we know they are missing friends and school activities. The district is working hard to make sure everyone has food they need for their bellies, the technology they need for their education, the child care that essential workers need to keep our society functioning, and the milestone experiences that we all have all been hoping for and planning on. These are not easy tasks for anyone, yet everyone in this community is pulling together to make it work. I'm proud to be part of this community and this school.

On a lighter note, in the past two weeks my library assignments have included art activities to create a patchwork elephant (Elmer) and a rainbow garden (Planting a Rainbow). Check out some of the beautiful elephants and gardens that are filling my Seesaw feed!
I could go on and on with the beautiful elephants and rainbow gardens, but I'll stop here. We are now moving on to a few weeks of digital citizenship lessons. Less colorful, but maybe a little more educational. :)
Please continue reading with your children and feel free to share some of the many great online resources available. As coronvirus sweeps across the nation, authors everywhere have begun offering story times online, via social media or just posting on their websites. Check out some of these great ones:

The Big List of Children’s Authors Doing Online Read Alouds & Activities
This is a curated list of authors who are reading their own books and offering literacy activities. Some authors have done one-time readings, while others are offering daily stories on Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube.

Storyline Online
Well-known celebrities read popular picture books. This is a project from the Screen Actor's Guild Foundation.

Story Time from Space
This is one of my favorites! Astronauts read popular children's books FROM SPACE! You can see them floating in the International Space Station. You can see the Space Station behind them. It's very cool!

Audible
Audible is one of the most popular audio book services. My family uses it all the time! We listen to classics, and new books, YA novels and self-help books, picture books and best sellers. They have everything (mostly) and they are offering it free to students whose schools have been closed due to coronavirus.

Scholastic Learn at Home
Scholastic has created day-by-day literacy projects to keep kids learning at home home. These are great supplemental activities to your child's literacy education -- and fun too!

Epic!
Epic! provides thousands of digital books for students to read free online. Check with your classroom teacher for a class code.

I will record myself reading some stories as well and post them as activities in Google Classroom or Seesaw. Remember, reading and being read to are equally valuable. Read to your kids and explore these online resources together. Take advantage of this time when your children are home. Enjoy!

What a whirlwind week it has been! Exactly one week ago we were in school, wondering what the status of school in Vermont would be for the foreseeable future. Other schools in other states had started closing down due to the rapid spread of the Cornonavirus (aka COVID-19). Because of my role, the principal had asked me a few days earlier to look into a few tech-related questions associated with closing school and transitioning to elearning. Friday afternoon he was pulled into a meeting at the Superintendents office and the Governor of VT was scheduled to speak in the evening. We were all (mentally) prepared to be shut down. But nope, Governor Scott said that schools will remain open. By Saturday schools within an hour from us had started closing and by Sunday the state of NH closed down their schools. Governor Scott made an announcement Sunday evening saying that schools in Vermont would also be closing and had to be closed by Wednesday, and that parents could optionally keep their kids home all week. There was a lot of confusion about the whole thing and we all waited anxiously for word on Sunday night about what the plan for Monday would be. It felt like a surreal snow day situation. Late Sunday night we got word that school would be open for students on Monday and Tuesday, then support staff would stay through Thursday and teachers would stay through Friday. We went in Monday to about half the student population, and by Monday night we were all feeling the rush. Our Wednesday staff meeting got canceled, the professional development I was supposed to do all morning on Wednesday got moved up to Tuesday with the boss finding coverage wherever he could for me and the other teachers. I had sub coverage on Monday and Tuesday while I rushed around, getting things setup, getting accounts made and Chromebooks organized and staff supported. It was wild. Kids had cracked and bleeding hands from washing so often. The run on Purell and toilet paper was a constant source of amazement and conversation. On Tuesday we had about 25% of the student body and staff was told we would have Wednesday to finish prepping, but that’s it. By 5pm Tuesday, when many of us were still there, prepping lessons and handing out Chromebooks, we got a message from the Superintendent that staff should stay home Wednesday, but admin would be there for the whole duration. As of Thursday, admin were told to stay home full time too. It was crazy! Like every minute things were changing and even sometimes when it wasn’t officially changed, we all had the feeling that it would be changing and were acting accordingly. It was nuts.

Now we are home, trying to adjust to this new normal. I keep forgetting what day it is. My own kids are in vacation mood, not yet fully understanding what "school" on Monday will look like. I don't fully understand what school on Monday will look like! It is such an amazing experience that we are all undergoing together; uncharted territory that we must explore blindly, hand in hand (but six feet apart!), and we find our way.

Hopefully by next week we’ll have settled in to this new version of school and life. We are currently closed until April 6th, but it's quite possible that we’ll be closed (much) longer than that. The unknown makes everything harder to plan for. What a weird and surreal experience.

On a lighter note, I’m so thankful that I work with kind and flexible coworkers, that our students are facing this bravely, that the technology exists to make this type of transition happen, and that my own family is healthy and well and not worried for our own health or financial stability. I’m thankful that the weather is warming and the days are getting longer. Can you imagine if this had happened in January?! At least now we can get outside, take the dog for a walk, and breath in the sunshine and fresh air.

Hang in there world, friends, and DBS family. We'll get through this together, side-be-virtual-side.Mrs. Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16645591657685887048noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8472371634247499954.post-6075833692331157602020-01-18T15:50:00.002-05:002020-01-18T15:54:01.184-05:00Multicultural Children's Book Day

Dear families,

January 31, 2020 is Multicultural Children’s Book Day. At Dothan Brook School we are preparing for MCCBD 2020 and hope you will join our celebration of diversity through children's books. As you may know, it is critical to expose children to books where they can see and learn about people like themselves (mirrors), as well as see and learn about people who are different from them (windows).

Multicultural Children’s Book Day‘s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in home and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents, and educators. According to their website, this non-profit has donated over 7,000 books to kids and that number continues to climb.

We will be celebrating Multicultural Children’s Book Day for a whole week at DBS! Starting on January 27th, class council lessons and library activities will focus on diversity in literature. We will also be introducing the concept of books as windows and mirrors. Lodge circles that week will focus on diversity in literature as well.

We would love for you to take this opportunity to discuss the importance of diversity in the books with your children as well. We understand that talking about diversity can be challenging and uncomfortable, even for parents and teachers! For many, there is a fear of saying the wrong thing, or opening up a conversation you aren’t able to fully address, and often it feels easier to just not even begin the discussion. We would encourage you to take this opportunity to give it a try. Remember, we are all learning together!

Here are a few suggestions for talking about diversity in literature with your children:

As you’re reading, pause to ask questions, such as:

What is it like to feel different and not fit in?

Was there a time you felt like this?

Don’t skip over foreign words. Make an effort to learn them. Practice saying them together.

Point out foods and clothing in stories that might be different from typical American food and clothing.

In your home library, have students find a book with a picture of someone who looks like them and a book with a picture with someone who doesn’t look like them.

As I scrolled through the replies I thought for sure my list would be all Minecraft, Dogman, and Amulet. Much to my surprise, other books made the list! I think the difference is in requested books versus checked out books. Certain books circulate much faster (Ninjago with the kinders) than others (Minecraft handbooks with the 3rd graders, for example).
She is the author of Just Like Jackie (a Dorothy Canfield Fisher book award nominee) and Right as Rain, both excellent YA novels based (in whole or in part) in Vermont. Lindsey spoke with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. She told them how she finds inspiration, how she has fed and watered "seeds" from her past that then grew into novels, and how they should look to their own experiences for inspiration as well. We even got a sneak peek at her newest book, coming out this summer. The kids were super excited. They had great questions and I now have a long reserve list for her books in the library. :)
The first round is to make a digital poster for your book. Students used the website PosterMyWall.com to create posters that represented their books in tone and style. This week the students will vote on their favorites from each bracket set and we'll see who moves on to round two - book trailers!
VermontFest is a fantastic tech-ed conference held at the Killington Grand Resort each fall. There are vendors and presenters from all over New England and I always leave with new ideas and inspiration.

This year's conference had two amazing keynote speakers: Dr. Nathan Lang-Raad and Dan Ryder. Dr. Lang-Raad has an extensive list of accomplishments for a guy who looks way too young to have such a long list! According to the Vita-Learn website, Dr. Lang-Raad is an "Author, Google Certified Educator, Microsoft Innovative Educator, 2016 Apple Teacher, Solution Tree Consultant, Chief Education Officer at WeVideo." He led sessions on instructional coaching and using WeVideo in the classroom, as well as delivered the keynote speech on the first day. He is relatively new to the New England area and has a brown bear story that will leave you in tears!

Dan Ryder, the keynote speaker for Day 2, is a "Success & Innovation Center Education Director
idea wrangler, design thinker, improviser, author, and award winning educator
Apple Distinguished educator, NEA Foundation’s 2018 Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence, and Co-founder of education consultancy, Wicked Decent Learning." He led sessions on design thinking and critical creativity. We had fun using Play-Doh, Legos, action figures, and other manipulatives to explore ways we can help bring creativity and whimsy into the classroom. I walked away from his Design Thinking session with a clear plan for handling one of my trickier classes! Dan's keynote had us all thinking about ways we can implement change within our own environments using creativity and fun.

While there I also got some podcasting questions answered during Joe Bertelloni's podcasting session, learned about new AR opportunities from Maureen Yoder and someone from CoSpaces. I ended Day 2 with Kelly McGee and Linda Mullin, both from Rutland Town School, talking about incorporating STEAM in the library (McGee) and using PLPs in kindergarten (Mullin). I got to use a 3D pen to make a cool snowflake, learned that I'm not persistent enough finish a Breakout box, and had my mind blown by the success Mullin is having getting her kinders using PLPs. I'm eager to talk to my kinder teachers about and share some of Mullin's tips and templates.
As usual, the kids were thrilled, the fair did well, and I am exhausted! This year we had a different schedule and a special visitor.

Parent conferences this year were on Monday and Tuesday, so I ran the book fair Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of one week, then Monday and Tuesday of the following, moving the fair down the lobby for parent conferences again. It was a mental challenge to keep the schedule straight in my head and, based on the number of questions I got, in the heads of everyone else as well. But we did it!

We also had a visit from Clifford the Big Red Dog on the day before the fair. He joined a guest reader (Mrs. Giroux or Mr. D) and read stories to prek, kindergarten, and 1st grade. Clifford was also kind enough to visiting the older kids upstairs for lots of hugs and smiles.

Each fall Banned Books Week rolls around and I never feel quite prepared for it. This year will be different. I've spent all weekend putting together a display and activities and, most importantly, words to have the discussion.

According to the American Library Association,

"Banned Books Week (September 22-28, 2019) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. It brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular."

Every year books are challenged on the basis of gender, sex, language, racism, witchcraft, and many other topics. Libraries have a formal process for reviewing a book challenge and the American Library Association tries to document these events. Each year they publish lists of the most challenged and banned books and celebrate Banned Books Week in order to draw attention to the dangers of censorship. Libraries around the world participate in events and activities to bring awareness to these issues.

A challenge occurs when a person or organization attempts to remove or restrict materials or services based on content. A ban occurs when the outcome of the challenge process results in the removal of the challenged materials or cancellation of the challenged services, based on their content.
I got a Little Free Library for DBS! :) I'm super excited. I've wanted one for awhile and last spring I asked Mr. D if we could put one in front of school. He loved the idea. I was hoping to find a boy scout or someone to do it for free, but ended up asking an awesome DBS family who likes doing family projects. They had a few kids graduate DBS and were excited to make a lasting project for the school. I was thrilled! I gave them free range on design and they ran with it. The week before school started they were ready to install.

There is a website called LittleFreeLibrary.org that started the movement (as best I know) and maintains a map of locations. I went to registered our new addition and discovered that it's a trademarked name! Of course! In order to use the name (which we obviously and clearly did!) and be listed on the map you have to pay a small fee and get a plaque. Guess what I did ASAP?! :) The plaque should be arriving in the mail any day now.

During the first week of school I was talking to each of the classes about it and I was thrilled that so many kids had already found it and started getting books. I love the expressions when I tell them that although it's called a "library" they can actually KEEP the books if they want to! And add some of their own that they are done with. The kids love it! I'll check on it regularly and keep it stocked with books as well, just in case kiddos take books faster than they leave them.
This is an amazing tool for students to take ownership of their learning, have access to authentic audiences, and better connect with families. Last year we used it with 2nd and 3rd graders and they loved it. Students, teachers, and parents alike!

I spent this week taking the Seesaw Ambassador training so I can utilize the program in the library and support teachers throughout the building. I'm looking forward to sharing what I've learned and helping students share their learning as well.

Check out the following video for more information about Seesaw.

We talked about when it was first written and how the variety of versions are similar and different. The story was first written in the late 1800's by James Halliwell-Phillipps, with a more popular version written several years later by Joseph Jacobs, crediting Halliwell-Phillipps.

After reading several versions of the story and retelling it, we started making our own stop motion version of the fairy tale.
For the Red Clover book award, The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors, by Drew Daywalt, won the vote at DBS and went on to win the state-wide vote as well.
This funny book explains the back story of these three great warriors and without fail every child starts playing the game as soon as the book is over.

The older kids were busy reading Dorothy Canfield Fisher book award nominees all year and when they got the chance to vote the results were a tie: Refugee and Ban This Book, both written by Alan Gratz! When the votes were tallied across the state, Refugee took the win.
Refugee is a powerful story of three separate children, in three separate periods of time, escaping their dangerous homelands and seeking refuge in a safer place.

Sadly we can't go to the award ceremony this year, but I hosted a little celebration in the library for those who read and voted in the Dorothy Canfield Fisher award. We had brownies, ice cream, and a fun Skype session with Terry Lynn Johnson, author of Falcon Wild! She talked about falconing, mushing (dog sleds!), and her new book. The kids had lots of great questions for her.
The 2019/20 list is out for both awards and the books are in. I'm looking forward to sharing them with students next fall.
Earlier in the year they each decorated a paint stick in art class, then I added bar codes and called them shelf markers. This week the kiddos learned how to use them. They were very responsible with them.
Did you know that NPR has a podcast series for kids called Dorothy's List? Once a month they focus on one of the book from the Dorothy Canfield Fisher book award list. They visit children in school to find out what they think of the book, what projects they're doing related to the book, and what questions they might have for the author. Then they ask the author! This is a great introduction to the books and an engaging podcast series for kids and adults alike. Check it out on NPR!Mrs. Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16645591657685887048noreply@blogger.com0
